Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program (URAP): URAP provides undergraduate students with an authentic science and engineering research experience alongside university researchers sponsored by the Army Research Office. Through this commuter program, students will develop skills in Army critical science and engineering research areas in a university lab setting to prepare them for the next steps of their educational and professional career.
U.S. Department of Defense (DOD): This homepage links dozens of internships available throughout the Department of Defense’s various branches including computer science, cybersecurity, engineering throughout the United States.
U.S. Department of Energy (DOE): Community College Internships are available through the DOE at one of their 15 laboratories. Students who are interested in entering technical careers relevant to the DOE mission should apply for a 10 week Summer internship or a 16 week Fall/Spring internship.
National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates: Provides an excellent opportunity for undergraduates to join research projects each summer in the earth sciences, ocean sciences, as well as other fields. The projects vary from year to year and are located everywhere from Alaska to Atlanta!
National Security Administration (NSA): NSA has multiple computer science and cybersecurity-related internship and enrichment programs. This home page will direct students to the appropriate program of their choice. The Computer Science Intern Program, in particular, would be great for STEM Core students.
NASA Internships: General internships in engineering, computer science, cybersecurity and other disciplines are available at all of the NASA centers across the country. Please note that applications require letters of recommendation from faculty.
NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS): NCAS (link is external) is an online community college internship program available to community college students. Chosen applicants will participate in a 5-week online course where they will put together various projects. The top students from the online course will get a chance to participate in a 4-day camp at a NASA location.
U.C. Berkeley Transfer to Excellence Summer Research Program: Participants are paired with a mentor and conduct research related to their course of study alongside UC students and faculty. The program also includes professional development on transferring successfully from a community college to UC.
Stanford Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF):
This eight-week residential-cohort experience exposes undergraduates to graduate research by working closely with doctoral students and faculty on a summer research project. SURF brings approximately 20 talented, motivated, and bright undergraduate students from across the country and provides them with an immersive research experience at Stanford Engineering.
